The mudslinging has started and it’s time to choose your candidate. Do you know who you are choosing to represent your community? The elections are more than who gains a seat within legislature, school board positions can also be on the ballot.

The school board is comprised of elected officials who govern your local public schools. They determine academic policies, such as curriculum and textbooks, school budget, bus routes, and so much more. Many believe that teachers deserve more pay and school board members are a factor in the decision of pay gaps for years of service and the structure in which we are paid.

As voters, we need to be aware and knowledgeable of who we are electing for government positions. It’s more than selecting your political party affiliation; we need to take time to determine a candidates’ leadership skills, agenda, and be perceptive of red herrings.

If a potential school board candidate is campaigning for office, please read and listen to their stance on curriculum and advanced courses, funding for our school buildings, knowledge of public schools, and overall interest in the community. If there are controversial matters such as potential school closings or redistricting, pay attention to their stance and determine if they have a viable solution. School board officials shape our children’s education which then impacts the future of this nation.

Be prepared and go vote!
